Newcastle United beat Cardiff City 2-1 at St. James’ Park this afternoon.

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has taken to Twitter to react to the Magpies’ 2-1 home win win over Cardiff City this afternoon.

Rafael Benitez’s men went into today’s game having won their last six matches, including last weekend’s hard-fought 2-1 win over Preston North End last weekend – and it’s now seven in a row after today’s success.

The Magpies took the lead in just the third minute as Aleksandar Mitrovic opened up the Cardiff City defence before teeing up Christian Atsu to convert the opener.

Yoan Gouffran then added a second to put Newcastle in cruise control, and whilst Peter Whittingham gave Cardiff a glimmer of hope with a 77th minute goal, it proved to be little more than a consolation as Benitez’s side closed the game out.

Newcastle remain three points clear the top of the Championship table, and are understandably the hot favourites to win promotion and an immediate return to the Premier League.

After the final whistle at St. James’ Park, Newcastle hero Alan Shearer took to Twitter to post a message to supporters and share his assessment of the game.

Shearer posted a photo of himself alongside Alan Thompson and Steve Harper, two Newcastle-born former Magpies players.

Shearer added that the performance from Benitez’s men wasn’t exactly pretty, but it’s the three points that matter as Newcastle chase promotion back to the top flight.
