Speaking on his podcast, Glenn Hoddle has gone out to bat for Jose Mourinho, claiming that he’s had words with journalists about the way he was questioned after their Europa League defeat last Thursday.

The manager was in the firing line after the 3-0 loss to Dinamo Zagreb, and he was actually asked about Hoddle’s comments where he described the performance as ‘diabolical’ in his post-match interview.

Hoddle wasn’t best pleased that his comments were used as ammunition in the interview, and he’s now commented on the situation.

“I think he was put under pressure to be honest, and I think that was wrong. What I said in the studio, I meant it. It was a diabolical performance for that one performance,” Hoddle said.

The BT Sport pundit then dissected the match a little bit, before continuing his point about the questions Mourinho faced.

“Afterwards it was the wrong questions to ask the manager, and it wasn’t fair to ask him that and use me as a buffer in a way from the studio, and I’ve had words with the people who said that. End of story, and Jose, I’ve got 120 per cent respect for Jose Mourinho.”

Hoddle is right here.

It wasn’t fair for Mourinho to be questioned about Hoddle’s criticism of the performance straight after the game. The manager had likely not seen the footage of Hoddle talking, and things can easily be taken out of context when you’ve not seen the full clip.

Luckily, Mourinho answered the question expertly and Hoddle has spoken to the journalists who asked him about it, so it seems as though we won’t get another situation like this again.
