Well, Liverpool supporters probably won’t be seeing Nathaniel Phillips in one of their jerseys for a while – if ever again.
Liverpool posted a message on Twitter on Friday, revealing that the former Bolton Wanderers powerhouse would be sidelined until 2022 with a broken cheekbone.
Phillips suffered the injury in the Reds’ Champions League victory away to Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s AC Milan on Wednesday night.
He and Liverpool teammate Ibrahima Konate kept the towering Sweden international on a relatively short leash through the contest at San Siro.
But Phillips failed to emerge from the clash unscathed.
Liverpool have confirmed that he has broken his cheek in an injury which likely stemmed from a late collision with Ibrahimovic.
Here is how some supporters of the Anfield club have reacted to the diagnosis on Twitter:
Farewell performance?
Whisper it, because Phillips is something of a cult hero at Liverpool, but that could potentially prove to be his final game for the Premier League outfit.
Because when he gets back to full fitness, the January transfer window will be open and anybody who has played as little as Phillips has this season is possibly going to try facilitate a departure.
And honestly, who can blame the colossus?
Despite playing a massive role in helping Liverpool qualify for the Champions League last season, due to a major injury crisis, the defender has managed only 134 minutes across all competitions this campaign.
Simply put, Jurgen Klopp has virtually no need for Phillips any longer and when he is fighting 100 percent fit, don’t be surprised if there is serious and substantial talk about a transfer away from Merseyside.
