Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips has said on the Lions’ Den, on England’s official Youtube channel, that he saw his Mum in the crowd immediately after setting up his nation’s goal in Croatia.
Phillips has celebrated his Mother’s birthday the day before England played at the weekend.
And he went on to give her the best birthday present of all, as he delivered a Man of the Match display against Croatia.
The Leeds midfielder helped set up Raheem Sterling’s goal in the contest, with a wonderfully weighted through ball.
Phillips was then quickly on the scene, as he raced to celebrate with his England teammates.
And the Leeds man couldn’t believe it when he looked up and saw his family in the crowd.
He said: “The crowd went mental. It was my Mum’s birthday the day before and when we celebrated she was literally right at the front at that side. So it felt like I was celebrating with her. It was weird!”
What a display
Phillips’ family would have been bursting with pride at the way he handled himself in his first ever game in an international performance.
The Leeds midfielder shone in the highest profile game of his career, as he proved his quality to everyone across England.
Phillips has now surely secured his place in England’s team ahead of their match against Scotland, when a victory will surely seal Gareth Southgate’s side passage into the knockout stages.
