Jurgen Klopp has stated that ‘no penalty’ should have been awarded to Aston Villa during their 1-0 defeat at Liverpool on Saturday, as he told Radio 5 Live Sport.
After Liverpool opened the scoring from the penalty spot, Villa went down the other end and were certain that Danny Ings was fouled by Alisson Becker.
The Villa substitute was running through on goal, before Joel Matip did well to put himself between man and ball.
But whilst doing that, he ended up colliding with Alisson, who was rushing off his line and trying to kick the ball away.
Alisson was then scrambling to get to the ball away and ended up punching Ings’ leg whilst he was in the penalty area.
But the on-field referee, nor VAR, saw any issue with that incident, despite the appeals from the Villa players.
After the game, Klopp was asked about that incident and Villa fans won’t like his response.
“How I saw it, it was no penalty,” said Klopp. “But nowadays, my eyes are not decisive. But for me, it wasn’t a penalty.
“Did you think it was a penalty?” Klopp asked the reporter… and when he answered ‘no’, he then added, ‘well, thank you.’

From a defensive standpoint, Villa have much to shout about and they will know that performances like that against other teams will result in them picking up points.
At the end of the day, Steven Gerrard’s side were coming up against possibly the best team in Europe and a side that has won six out of their six games in the Champions League this season.
That’s the first time in Champions League history that an English side has achieved that feat.
Then there’s the fact that the Reds have scored 45 goals this season – no Premier League side has scored more, so far, yet they couldn’t score from open play against Villa.
