Michael Owen has blamed Fabinho for the injury he sustained in Liverpool’s victory away to Aston Villa tonight.

Liverpool beat Steven Gerrard’s side 2-1 at Villa Park to move level on points with Manchester City at the summit of the Premier League table.

The Reds certainly threw themselves a title lifeline after dropping two points at home to Tottenham Hotspur this past weekend.

However, there was a negative element about the victory about Fabinho went off injured in the first half with a suspected hamstring injury.

The big Brazilian midfielder is an essential cog in Jurgen Klopp’s machine and time will tell how severe the problem is.

Fabinho had been chasing down Philippe Coutinho moments before going to ground, having gifted the ball to his former Liverpool teammate in the first place with a poor first touch.

And Owen believes that very backtracking on his own mistake is what led to the hamstring problem.

He said live on Premier League Productions: “It’s a big one, one of the first names on the team sheet. You know what, it was his own fault in a way. It was a really poor first touch which made him chase the ball back. Look at his left hand hold his left hamstring.”

Klopp sweating

Liverpool have an FA Cup final with Chelsea on Saturday afternoon and then a Champions League final with Real Madrid in Paris one week after that.

Fabinho has played a massive role in the Reds’ success under Klopp over the past few years and no doubt that it’s a colossal blow to their hopes of a quadruple if the former Monaco powerhouse is absent.

The German manager will now be sweating over whether his man can compete in the club’s run-in.

Jordan Henderson was exceptional when he replaced Fabinho and maybe, just maybe, Klopp will regret having not rested Fabinho, as he did with the Liverpool captain, Thiago and Mohamed Salah.
