Anwar El Ghazi told Sky Sports that he spoke with Dean Smith about wrongly getting sent off against Leeds in 2019 prior to Aston Villa’s win at Elland Road over the weekend.

In 2019, both Leeds and Villa contested one of the most remarkable matches in Championship history when Marcelo Bielsa allowed the away team to score an uncontested goal.

All of that chaos also resulted in El Ghazi being shown a straight red – which was later overturned – for apparently hitting out at Patrick Bamford.

Well, fast forward two years later and the versatile winger was returning to familiar territory and scoring the winning goal.

El Ghazi had a smile on his face when he was asked whether his early strike was redemption for what happened last time out, as he shared what he told his manager about that incident.

“I was talking with the gaffa about it yesterday (on Friday) that the last time we were here it was hectic and chaotic,” said El Ghazi.

“I’m happy that this time it was a better end for me. The last time it was really disappointing. I was very upset because I knew with the play-offs and everything, so I am happy with the result.”

A number of the players that were present that day were playing or on the sidelines at the weekend.

The only notable absentees were Jonathan Kodjia, who was the one who went down injured and Adomah who was allowed to score the uncontested goal.

Plus, who could forget the now-Brentford defender Pontus Jansson, who wasn’t entirely pleased with Villa scoring an uncontested goal that day.

Either way, that game has resulted in this match having a bit of needle now and some of that was present on Saturday.
