Paul Merson has said that Steven Gerrard’s Rangers embarrassed Neil Lennon’s Celtic once this season, as quoted in The Herald.

The former Arsenal star, who now works as a pundit for Sky Sports, believes that the way that Rangers played Celtic ‘off the park’ at Celtic Park in December 2019 was “embarrassing”.

However, Merson has praised Celtic for turning up every week and winning matches, adding that he does not think that the Hoops are much better than Rangers.

The Herald quotes Merson as saying: “I watched Rangers wipe the floor with Celtic before the winter break when they won at Celtic Park. They played them off the park. It was embarrassing and it was like Rangers were going to go on and win the league by 15 points.

“Then Celtic went on a run of 10 or 11 games and Rangers are losing against teams lower down the league. That’s what I mean about having to turn up every single week.

“I don’t think Celtic are much better than Rangers but what they’ve got is that they turn up every week knowing what to do. Celtic treat every game like a cup final. Rangers need to get that.”

Comfortable title win

Although the Scottish Premiership season had to be called early due to the global health crisis, Celtic were likely to win the title if the remaining games had been played.

The Hoops were as many as 13 points clear of second-placed and bitter Old Firm rivals Rangers at the top of the league table.

True, Gerrard’s side had a game in hand, and there were also two Old Firm derbies left to be played this past campaign, but it is hard to envisage Celtic suffering a collapse in the final games of the season.

Celtic will now be looking to make it 10 Scottish Premiership titles in a row in 2020-21.
