Speaking on Rio Ferdinand’s YouTube channel, Ollie Watkins has opened up on how he felt when Aston Villa signed him in the summer.
Watkins moved for a mammoth transfer fee in the summer, as Aston Villa paid a fee that could end up being as high a £33m for the former Brentford ace.
The striker had just come off the back of an incredibly prolific season for the Bees, but he still maintains that he was shocked when a team as big as Villa came in for him.
“It was a shock to be honest, my agent came to my house and he was there for 30 minutes and then we were leaving to go to Birmingham. I said to my Mrs ‘pack your bags, we’re going’ and she was on a work call at the time, and she said ‘we can’t be going I’ve not done my hair or my make-up,” but it was crazy. It all happened so quick,” Watkins said.
The striker may have been shocked when a Premier League team came in for him, but he’s shown that he belongs in the top-flight this season.
The 25-year-old has enjoyed an incredible debut campaign at Villa Park, and that’s been rewarded with an England call-up.
The striker has been one of Villa’s best players this season, and that transfer fee is already starting to look like a bit of a bargain.
