Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Christian Eriksen’s future in north London is currently up in the air.
Sky Sports pundit Charlie Nicholas highlighted the importance of Tottenham tying Christian Eriksen down to a new deal, or risk starting a domino effect where many of their top players will leave for pastures new.
The Denmark international has been excellent for Spurs, since joining from Ajax for around £12.5 million in the summer of 2013, and he is now unquestionably one of Mauricio Pochettino’s first names of the team-sheet.
The problem for Tottenham is that the 26-year-old’s current deal expires in the summer of 2020, so if he doesn’t commit to a new deal soon, they might just have to consider selling him, rather than losing him for nothing in 18 months time.
Nicholas told Sky Sports how Spurs will risk losing many of their top players, if Eriksen fails to extend his current deal at the club:
“Christian Eriksen appears unsure about his future contract and so might go elsewhere. They don’t have the money to splash the cash and it only takes one to drift.”
According to the Independent, Tottenham are prepared to offer Eriksen a new deal worth between £200,000 and £250,000 per week, but whether that will be enough to convince him to stay remains to be seen.
