Chris Sutton has admitted on BBC Radio 5 Live’s 606 show that the Premiership title race between Rangers and Celtic is ‘nearly’ over.

Robbie Savage was asking the former striker whether it’s ‘all over for Celtic’ in their quest to close down Rangers’ 11-point lead at the top of the table.

Whilst those at Parkhead have two games in hand on their Old Firm rivals, it has been a quite catastrophic number of weeks for Neil Lennon.

There’s no doubt that Sutton likes to be a wind-up merchant, but Savage played him at his own game when discussing those in Glasgow.

“Is it all over for Celtic,” Savage asked.

“It’s not all over, it nearly is,” responded Sutton. “Why are you asking that? It nearly is.”

Savage then added: “If this was Rangers, you would be hammering them.”

Sutton then claimed that he has also “hammered” Celtic when they got knocked out of Europe but Savage wasn’t having any of it and told him “well, you haven’t”.

But the former Premier League winner couldn’t help but adding: “But he [Gerrard] hasn’t won anything yet”.

From Celtic’s perspective, today’s Scottish League Cup encounter will be a much-needed distraction from the mess that is unfolding before them both in the league and in Europe.

If Lennon were to suffer a defeat at the hands of Ross County then the Green Brigade may have to unveil another banner.

It does seem as though time is ticking for Lennon at Parkhead, but given his stubborn nature, he will fight on. How much that damages or benefits Celtic, it remains to be seen.
