Well, Mikel Arteta has signed a new contract at Arsenal.

The Gunners are major favourites to qualify for the Champions League next season, with Arteta’s side fourth in the Premier League standings with four games remaining.

Whispers of Arteta signing a new deal began earlier in the year.

But a three-game losing streak in the Premier League meant that announcing it then would’ve been disastrous timing by Arsenal.

However, the club have announced this morning that the Spanish manager has signed an extension until the year 2026.

But Simon Jordan, speaking live on talkSPORT, says it’s all rather meaningless.

He said this morning: “It’s really academic. I felt he earned another year. If Arsenal progress next year, he’ll be in situ. If they have a terrible season next year, all that’ll happen is he’ll get more money out of getting sacked. So I think it means very little.”

Meaningless?

Well, not quite.

Arteta is clearly popular in the Arsenal dressing room and although they lost three on the spin recently, they responded by beating Chelsea, Manchester United and West Ham United in successive games.

That sort of form is impossible if the squad aren’t 100 percent behind the manager.

Morale was already high at Arsenal on the back of those victories, but now it could be even higher going into a massive period.

These last four Premier League games are massive because any slip-up could and probably will result in Tottenham – who they visit on May 12 – stealing a march on them and leapfrogging Arteta’s side into fourth position.

It’s vitally important that Arteta keeps the feel-good factor going in North London and this news might well enhance that.
