David James backed the Leeds United players for being in ‘party’ mode after their 2-1 win over Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday evening, as he told Premier League Productions (29/10/22 at 9:55 pm).
Leeds United went into yesterday’s game with no Premier League wins since August and playing a Liverpool side that hadn’t been beaten on home soil in 30 league games.
Well, they couldn’t have had a better start when Joe Gomez gifted Rodrigo with the opening goal, and despite Mo Salah pulling a goal back, it was Crysencio Summerville wheeling away in celebrating towards the end.
That sent the Leeds players and the bench into wild celebrations, and after the full-time whistle, when Jesse Marsch was doing his post-match interview, you could hear loud music blaring from the Leeds changing rooms.
Given that the Whites hadn’t won in so many months and there was pressure on Marsch’s job, it was perhaps a mix of celebrations as well as relief from the Leeds players yesterday.
Former England goalkeeper David James told the Leeds players to ‘enjoy it’ after they were written off before a ball was kicked.
“You are a team in dire straits, you are playing a team that everybody expects you to get beat by easily and then you end up scoring a winner, right at the death as well,” said James.
“So, the party just continues from the goal and straight into the changing rooms, which it looks like it has done, so enjoy it.”
HISTORIC WIN AT ANFIELD
To think that Leeds United’s last two wins have come against teams in the Champions League – Chelsea and Liverpool – suggests that they don’t like to make things look easy.
The Yorkshire club just went through a period where they failed to beat the likes of Brentford, Crystal Palace, Aston Villa, Leicester City and Fulham, to name a few.
On paper, these are all winnable matches, not the Liverpool one, but Leeds being Leeds did things the hard way.
