Speaking on the Wrighty’s House Podcast, Ian Wright has been discussing Unai Emery after the Spaniard got the Aston Villa job.
Of course, Wright knows Emery very well from his time as the manager of Arsenal – Wright’s former club, and he does have some reservations about this appointment.
Indeed, the pundit says that during Emery’s time at Arsenal, the football didn’t flow and everything felt a bit overcoached during his time at the Emirates – stating that he hopes he’s learned from that ahead of his spell at Villa Park.

Emery wasn’t a hit for Arsenal
Wright and his co-host shared their concerns about Emery.
“That is my concern with Emery at Villa, he’s not necessarily the wrong man for the job, it’s the wrong time, they need someone who is going to light the place up. They’ve been so bored for so long and they need a spark,” Wright’s co-host said.
“This is what I was saying about Emery at Arsenal. I didn’t see any of that. It felt very defensive, it felt over-coached, it just didn’t flow. It was rigid that’s what it is and you have to hope that he’s learned something about this,” Wright added.
Results business
As much as Aston Villa fans are desperate to see some exciting and attacking football, the only thing that matters in this game is results.
If Emery’s Villa start winning games and moving up the Premier League table, fans really won’t mind.
However, with this squad, perhaps the only way to win is to play attacking football.
