Martin Keown has admitted that he’s worried by Mikel Arteta’s faith in Arsenal defender David Luiz.
The 33-year-old had a stinker in Wednesday’s 3-0 defeat by Manchester City.
Luiz, who joined Arsenal last summer, cost his side their first goal and then conceded a penalty – and got sent off – as the Gunners fell two goals behind.
There was speculation of Luiz leaving Arsenal before that horror show, but Arteta came out swinging and defended his centre-back straight after the game.
It’s since been reported that the North Londoners are working on a one-year extension for the player who’s out of contract this month.
And legendary Arsenal centre-back Keown is baffled, telling talkSPORT: “I don’t think he’s blessed with too many options.
“But it is worrying that Arteta is backing a player who probably isn’t quite good enough, I think there’s no doubt about that. I don’t want to humiliate the player further, we all have bad performances, but it’s one after another.”
Virtually every Arsenal fan wants to see the back of Luiz, but it isn’t as simple as that.
With Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Calum Chambers and Pablo Mari injured, the Spaniard isn’t blessed with a lot of depth at centre-back at the moment, which means that they can’t offload the Brazilian defender without shooting themselves in the foot to some extent.
