Sol Campbell has stated it’s ‘scary’ how everything has turned around for Leeds United, as he backed Everton to survive relegation from the Premier League, as he told talkSPORT.
The former England defender added Leeds ‘didn’t see it coming’ and this recent drop into the relegation zone has ‘crept up on them’.
Whilst Everton recorded a valuable point away at already-relegated Watford on Wednesday night, Jesse Marsch watched his side crumble to a 3-0 defeat to Chelsea.
It didn’t help matters that Dan James was shown a straight red card in the first half – the second game running that Leeds have had a man sent off.
Either way, this is what Campbell had to say about the relegation battle, as he hinted that Leeds’ time could be up.
“It’s kind of scary how it has all turned around (for Leeds),” said Campbell. “It is scary.
“When you have got that sinking feeling, then you have that mentality as well, then all of a sudden, it has crept up on them and BANG, they are there.
“They were kind of three spaces above the relegation, then all of a sudden it’s like ‘wow, we are treading on water’. And we didn’t see it coming.
“Burnley have the experience of getting out. Everton, historically, would just keep out because historically they would stay up. Leeds are bang in trouble.”
Leeds’ goal difference could prove to be costly
The problem facing Leeds is that, not only are they in the final relegation spot, but both Burnley and Everton have played a game less.
On top of that, their goal difference is so bad that you may as well add an extra point towards Everton and Burnley’s current tally.
Frank Lampard’s side, if they beat Brentford on Sunday, and Leeds fail to beat Brighton, then their safety is secured.
All in all, the Whites could be down by next Thursday if they lose before the final day and other results go against them.
