Speaking on The Transfer Window Podcast, journalist Ian McGarry has claimed that Tottenham have made a decision on their transfer policy for this month.
Tottenham’s decision is an interesting one, and we can’t help but feel that it’s somewhat short-sighted.
Indeed, the London outfit have decided to wait and see how their results pan out from now until the end of the month, and they’ll judge whether or not to make a signing based on that.
“This is a very different window as we have pointed out, due to the effect of football finances and Covid,” McGarry said.
“It is our information, that both Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur have decided to wait and see in terms of results, tehse are two clubs of course that are mounting a credible title challenge to Liverpool, but at the same time struggling, I don’t suppose Manchester United are struggling financially, but they did make a loss in the last financial year, as did Spurs.
“The idea that forward planning includes waiting to see what happens in terms of results’ IE ‘if we’re succeeding with what we’ve got, why change it and why spend money?’ Compared to, ‘we’ve got a real chance of winning the title here’.”
This may not be the best policy from Tottenham.
Deciding on your entire season based on a few weeks of results is a dangerous game to play, and Daniel Levy could be lulled into a false sense of security by results that simply paper over the cracks.
Tottenham play Fulham, Sheffield United and Brighton before the end of the month, and with all due respect, those are three of the easiest games that you could ask for in this league, and winning those wouldn’t necessarily show that Spurs don’t need reinforcements.
Spurs could still be active this month, but new signings will only come if something goes wrong on the pitch.
