Speaking on the Transfer Window Podcast, journalist Ian McGarry has shared some insight into Arsenal’s transfer dealings this summer.
The Gunners were amongst the biggest spenders in Europe this summer, and while they spent a lot, the manager apparently didn’t have much of a say on matters.
Indeed, McGarry believes that Arteta has had barely any influence into the signings, claiming that Edu and new arrival Richard Garlick were the masterminds behind the Gunners’ window.
What’s been said?
McGarry gave an update on Arsenal’s business.
“It is my information that Mikel Arteta has not had a huge amount of influence in regards to the choosing and the decision making on players that have been recruited. Instead that responsibility has gone down to Sporting Director Edu and Richard Garlick as well,” McGarry said.
“I’d be slightly concerned if I were Arteta, not only because Arsenal are bottom of the table, but because he’s not had the major influence in regards to recruitment as well, which kind of suggests either he’s not trusted or he’s being trusted simply by being given players and being told he has to make these guys work because they’ve paid a lot of money for them.”
Worrying
As McGarry says, it’s worrying for Arteta that he hasn’t had a say, but what’s even more worrying is that Edu and Garlick have made some questionable signings.
Of course, it’s too early to truly write off any of the players Arsenal have bought, but the reality is that £24m for a backup goalkeeper is excessive, while £50m for Ben White doesn’t represent much of a bargain either.
Arteta may not have had much of a say in how Arsenal spent their money this summer, but sadly, it may end up costing him dearly.
