Joe Willock has said that he plans to speak to Alan Shearer about scoring more goals for Newcastle United.

The former Arsenal midfielder has told The Telegraph that he needs to score more goals for the Magpies.

While the midfielder is very happy with how he has progressed and developed at Newcastle, he is not pleased with his current goalscoring rate.

The £25 million (The Telegraph) star has made 29 starts and four substitute appearances in the Premier League for the Magpies this season.

Willock has scored three goals and given six assists in those games.

Last season, the 23-year-old scored two goals in 24 Premier League starts for the Magpies.

Joe Willock on scoring more goals for Newcastle

Willock said: “My all round game has developed in so many ways, defensively and offensively. I think I’m far more involved in games than I was. I’m affecting them regularly. I understand my role a lot more, but there is still a long way to go.”

The midfielder added: “I know I need to score more goals, that’s the thing that hasn’t happened this season and it is annoying. I’ve been getting into the positions to score and not taking the chances.

“Maybe I need to speak to Alan (Shearer) and get some advice. I’ve looked at my stats and if I’d taken those chances I would be up there with the leading midfield players in Europe. But I’ve not taken them. I know what Alan will say – hit the ball hard – but I think I’ve been hitting it too hard.”

Encouraging

In our view, it is very encouraging that Joe Willock wants to score more goals for Newcastle United and is actively looking to do something about it.

That the former Arsenal midfielder plans to speak to Alan Shearer is very wise.

After all, Shearer is a Newcastle legend and is one of the greatest goalscorers of all time.

Shearer is the all-time highest goalscorer in the Premier League.

Now, Willock is a very good and dynamic midfielder who can drive the team forward and take up good positions in the final third to score goals.

A bit of advice from Shearer and hard work in training could see him become a goalscoring midfielder in the long run.
