Luis Suarez has broken his silence on Liverpool snapping up Darwin Nunez this week.
The Anfield outfit have broken their transfer record on signing the former Benfica attacker in a £85 million deal.
The 22-year-old has massive boots to fill because the last Uruguay international who pulled on a Liverpool shirt wound up being something of an iconic figure on the red half of the Merseyside divide.
Suarez netted 69 Premier League goals in 110 outings for the English club, making him a legendary figure.
Last night, Nunez posted the latest in a series of Liverpool-related Instagram posts – and he got a surprise response.
Nunez uploaded a photograph of himself outside the Axa Training Centre, accompanied by the caption ‘Siempre uruguayo’ – Spanish for ‘Always Uruguayan’.
Suarez responded by writing: “I was the first the same! But I hope you are the first to GOALS! Hug.”
The newly-signed Liverpool hitman then added in response: “It is an honor for me to follow in your footsteps! I hope I can perform like you did in Liverpool.”
As if the £85 million price-tag wasn’t enough pressure, Nunez now has to prove he is something of a Suarez 2.0 under Jurgen Klopp next season and beyond.
However, it’s worth pointing out that the Reds have a near-flawless transfer record when it comes to spending major money.
Virgil van Dijk was Liverpool’s record signing before Nunez, with Alisson, who cost £66 million in 2018 [BBC Sport], the third-most expensive addition right now.
The chances are Nunez will prove to be worth every penny and it’s fascinating to see how he’ll perform.
One thing we know for certain, he certainly has the backing of Suarez.
