Matthew Upson has told BBC Radio 5 Live Sport that Leeds United’s Patrick Bamford had a ‘very difficult’ afternoon on his England debut on Sunday afternoon.

The Leeds hitman started for his country during their World Cup qualifier against Andorra at Wembley.

Gareth Southgate opted to rest some of his big boys, including players such as Harry Kane, which opened the door for the Leeds man to earn his first start.

But he couldn’t really get going against the Andorian low-block and England midfielders who were pretty selfish on the ball.

Upson delivered an honest verdict on Bamford’s debut for the Three Lions today, as they recorded a 4-0 win.

“A difficult outing,” said Upson. “I think it has been quite a difficult afternoon. That is why I asked, is it harder playing against teams like this as a centre-forward?

“I think it has proven to be very difficult. He has done well at times.”

England were leading 1-0 when Bamford was taken off by Gareth Southgate just after the hour mark.

But as he left the field, Kane converted from the spot-kick minutes later, Jesse Lingard added his second with a clever finish from outside of the penalty area before Bukaya Saka topped it all of towards the end.

That’s just your bad luck because if Bamford had stayed on the field for a few more minutes then he perhaps would have taken the penalty.

Either way, he can learn from Kalvin Phillips, who didn’t get his England engine going straight away, but he eventually started to thrive on the international stage.
