Jamie Carragher has criticised Andy Robertson for what he did during Liverpool’s 4-1 defeat earlier on Saturday.
What’s the story?
Well, the 45-year-old was not happy with the Liverpool No.26 following his part in Julian Alvarez’s equaliser for Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.
Robertson went wandering as the Citizens played themselves in behind the Liverpool backline, allowing the Argentina international to slot home as the Scotland international was nowhere to be seen.
Carragher highlighted the fact that the £8m man can’t always go pressing high up the pitch, and made a reference to the Liverpool left-back making that exact same mistake in the 1-0 Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid.
As you may remember, Federico Valverde had all the time in the world out on Robertson’s side to pick out Vinicius Junior at the back post, for the Brazil international to slot past Alisson in Paris.
The Sky Sports pundit wrote on Twitter: “Andy Robertson goes chasing into midfield & leaves his man, it happens a lot (CL final). You can’t always press!”
Carragher is spot on.
While Liverpool as a unit could have done better to prevent the ball getting to that area of the pitch, the final action may have been prevented if Robertson was in line with his fellow defenders.
Liverpool fans & Carragher should go easy on Robertson
In fairness to Robertson, he offers Liverpool a unique outlet with his energy down the left flank – he is arguably the best defender in the Premier League when it comes to attacking.
In his 256 appearances for the Reds, he has impressively provided 61 assists in addition to scoring eight goals.

Therefore, Liverpool would be nullifying one of their best assets if they made a huge deal out of telling the 29-year-old to focus more on defending rather than getting forward.
Of course, that isn’t to say that Robertson should be allowed to ignore his defensive duties, but perhaps the lack of athleticism in midfield – which would provide better cover for the Scot as seen in the past – should be receiving more of the attention.
