Michael Dawson has claimed that Liverpool midfielder, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, would make a ‘slight improvement’ on Newcastle.
It was put to the former centre-back, by Sky presenter, Jeff Stelling, ‘it emerged this week’ that Newcastle wanted to sign the Liverpool player during the January transfer window.
During the winter transfer window, the Magpies, given that they were taken over by a Saudi-led group, were linked with every player under the sun, so a player like Oxlade-Chamberlain, who is a back-up at Anfield, would have been mentioned.
In truth, that situation probably won’t change come the summer, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if those rumours re-emerge.
Nonetheless, Dawson questioned whether Newcastle are now looking at the ‘next level’ player, after being told about Oxlade-Chamberlain, as he told Sky Sports News.
Jeff Stelling stated: “It emerged this week that Newcastle tried to sign Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in January, so potentially he will be one (Newcastle could sign) because, with all due respect, he’s a bit-part player at Liverpool.”
Dawson responded: “Yes, but when we sat here and spoke about January. Dan Burn, who I think has been sensational for them. Then, are we talking, are we going to the next level?
“£60 million (to possibly spend in the summer), that’s not enough to spend. That’s one player. Oxlade-Chamberlain, he would be a slight improvement on what they have got.
“I think Newcastle are in a good position. They will attract players. It’s a great place to play and doesn’t stop you from earning a few quid.”
Regardless of whether Oxlade-Chamberlain joins Newcastle or not, he probably needs to find a new club in the summer.
The former Arsenal man is at the business end of his career, but isn’t starting regularly for the Reds.
For a squad player, he is earning enough minutes because he has ten Premier League starts to his name and he is playing for one of the best clubs in the world.
From that perspective, it can be hard for a player to leave Anfield and join another club because, in truth, it will be a step-down.
