Kieran Gibbs has shared his thoughts on Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal possibly securing the free transfer of Ilkay Gundogan from rivals Manchester City.

Whilst the former left-back acknowledges that the quick-thinking midfielder is a ‘phenomenal’ player and someone Arsenal should ‘push’ to sign, he doesn’t like the fact that Mikel Arteta continually looks to sign players from Manchester City.

Both Oleksandr Zinchenko and Gabriel Jesus arrived last summer, with Ilkay Gundogan possibly following suit, but it ‘doesn’t sit right’ with Gibbs that the Gunners are going down this road again, as he told ESPN.

At 32, Gundogan, who has won five Premier League titles at the Etihad, is having issues agreeing on a new contract with Man City – Fabrizio Romano shared his thoughts.

As a result, it has opened the door for him to leave for nothing in July, and given that Arteta worked with him at the Etihad, then he wants his Premier League title-chasing side to secure his signature.

Gibbs shared that he played against the German international when he was at Dortmund and he knew that he had the quality to go right to the top.

“I would push it, I would push it,” said Gibbs. “He’s been an outstanding player for Man City. I even loved him at Dortmund. I played against him a few times there.

“I could always tell that he has phenomenal ability. Top, top player.

“It does leave a sour taste that we just keep stealing players from Man City to make Arsenal stronger. A little bit of it doesn’t sit right with me. But you can’t deny the quality of this guy. You have to do it, if you want to be the best, then you have to get the best players.”

GUNDOGAN WOULD ELEVATE ARSENAL’S MIDFIELD

If Arsenal are to challenge for the Premier League title again, then they need players from the summer transfer market that can elevate, not their squad, but their XI.

Someone like Gundogan would do that and possibly argue that he is better than what Arteta can pick from.

But what’s even more important is that he is a crunch player. When those difficult moments arrive, he is scoring goals for fun, which is something Arsenal desperately need.
