Paul Ince told Optus Sport on Premier League Productions that it didn’t make sense as to why Heung-Min Son was acting like a defensive midfielder during Tottenham’s defeat on Sunday.

The former midfielder was making special reference to Tottenham conceding the equaliser after the break.

After a controversial first 45 minutes, Manchester United came out all guns blazing during the second period, with Fred levelling the scores.

And Jose Mourinho’s defensive set-up, which saw Son acting as a number six, left Ince questioning what was going on.

“It’s a great run from Cavani,” said Ince. “This is Tottenham defending deep. This is Son, your holding midfield player, it doesn’t make sense to me.

“You talk about Mourinho’s organisation and putting players in the right positions. It’s poor.

“Aurier gets dragged out. Cavani is clever. He sees that Aurier is gone and he sneaks in behind Rondon into that space (and then assists Fred).”

Style of play has been a common theme for Mourinho since he returned to the Premier League and took over the reins at Tottenham.

After going from the swash-buckling and easy-on-the-eye style of Mauricio Pochettino, those in North London are now being served a more rigid, aggressive and defensive-orientated style under Mourinho.

At the end of the day, if Mourinho delivers a trophy then he has surpassed what Pochettino achieved at the club.

But if he doesn’t then he’s probably booked in for a swift exit.
