Ian Wright told ITV Sport that ‘it doesn’t make sense’ why Tottenham forward Harry Kane was dropping so deep for England on Sunday.
Tottenham’s thriving striker was on the scoresheet again yesterday, this time helping his country to a comfortable 2-0 win against Albania during their World Cup qualifier.
And even though Kane opened the scoring in Tirana, he was finding himself in midfield positions that he would usually take up at Tottenham, but wasn’t needed yesterday.
And Wright made it clear that given the quality of players around Kane, compared to Tottenham, he didn’t need to drop deep, including being on the halfway line, on some occasions.
“When you consider that you have Mason Mount, you have Phil Foden and even Raheem Sterling there,” said Wright. “You are thinking that ‘you don’t need to come. Don’t come’. Simply because you want him up there.
“Once this starts building up (Kane on the halfway line as England are about to attack) you are thinking ‘you have to bust a gut now to get back in there’. You look at where he is (outside of the penalty area as the cross is about to come in).
“Why is he coming this deep against Albania, I don’t know. It doesn’t make sense to me.
“You look at this situation (for the goal). He is in there (the penalty area). Those guys are afraid of what he’s capable of doing. That’s where you want him. You don’t want him out there and doing all that.”
Of course, for his club, Kane has been the all-rounder and it’s a big reason as to why he is in double figures in both assists and goals.
But for England, there is a lot more creative and attacking talent and Kane doesn’t need to try and do two or three jobs at once.
Against the so-called lesser nations such tactics don’t work, but when Gareth Southgate’s side lock horns with the big boys, that’s when Kane’s all-rounder-like qualities will come in handy.
