Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard has issued a worrying update on Diego Carlos, who this weekend picked up what looks to be a serious injury in Saturday’s 2-1 win against Everton.
Speaking to the press via Sky Sports News, the English coach revealed the Brazilian defender isn’t looking good after the £26m summer signing from Sevilla came off in stoppage time for the hosts and was later spotted leaving Villa Park in a protective boot and on crutches.
Carlos impressed before coming off injured, and this latest update from Gerrard could mean that Villa will have to dip back into the transfer market for another centre-back should the South American be ruled out for a long period of time, with the results of an MRI scan yet to come back.
With Villa already spending big on transfers this summer, the last thing Gerrard needs is to be forced back into the market to make another signing should Carlos find himself out for months due to injury, yet based on the 42-year-old’s comments, an extra arrival could be made in the coming weeks.
Indeed, Carlos was viewed by many as one of the best signings of the summer window, and the defender potentially missing months of the season due to injury will be a cruel way for the 29-year-old to spend his first year in the Premier League, especially after Villa’s win to Everton.
Gerrard said when asked about the Brazilian centre-back: “We’ll have to wait and see what the update is of Diego Carlos’s injury and why he’s gone off the pitch because I’m extremely worried about that situation. We’re going to send him for an MRI scan but it doesn’t look good right now.”
