John Achterberg has been speaking to The Athletic about the goalkeeping department at Liverpool, where he shared his thoughts on Loris Karius.

What’s the story?

Well, the 28-year-old has not played a competitive match for Liverpool since that day in Kiev back in 2018.

Karius has spent time on loan at Beşiktaş and Union Berlin following the arrival of Alisson Becker, although he’s currently wasting away on the sidelines at Liverpool.

As a result, Achterberg – who works as a goalkeeping coach – had advised him to find a new club, where he can showcase his “good qualities”.

The Athletic quote the Dutchman as saying: “In the end it’s down to him, his agent and the club to try to find a solution. Hopefully, there will be one this month.

“It doesn’t help anyone to sit for another six months without the feeling that you are really fighting for something. That’s not going to improve him. He needs to use his quality to make a career now. Loris has a lot of good qualities.”

Since Karius slipped up against Real Madrid, Jürgen Klopp has brought Adrian to Anfield, while also promoting Caoimhin Kelleher.

As things stand, the German is Klopp’s fourth choice in between the sticks.

What should Liverpool do with Loris Karius?

If we were Michael Edwards, we’d be trying hard to find a buyer for Karius, as he only has six months left on his contract.

Should he remain on Merseyside after Deadline Day this month, then the Reds are set to lose their £4.7m asset for nothing.

In truth, there’s nothing Liverpool or Edwards can do.

By the sounds of Achterberg’s comments, Karius isn’t doing enough to find himself a new club, so if that is the case, he should be putting more effort in.

It doesn’t say a great deal about his determination if he’s happy to stay at the AXA Training Centre and be Klopp’s fourth choice.

Nevertheless, that is not Liverpool’s problem. The Reds have three quality goalkeepers in Alisson, Kelleher and Adrian, so whatever happens to Karius doesn’t really impact Klopp whatsoever.

Hopefully, the Liverpool No.22 can find himself a new club and resurrect his career – as we saw before his horrorshow against Real Madrid, he has the talent to do so.
