It doesn’t give me anything: Thomas Christiansen reacts when told about Leeds’ defensive stat

Leeds United beat Birmingham City 2-0 on Tuesday night.

Leeds United manager Thomas Christiansen has told BBC Radio Leeds that the statistics surrounding the club’s defensive prowess are just numbers.

Leeds picked up another win on Tuesday night, defeating Birmingham City 2-0 at Elland Road thanks to goals from Samu Saiz and Stuart Dallas.

The Whites have now made it five wins from their seven league games, picking up two draws in their other games to remain as the only unbeaten team left in the Championship.

Given the huge upheaval at Elland Road this past summer, many fans are surprised by the superb start to the season, with manager Christiansen excelling following Garry Monk’s exit.

Christiansen may have lost first-team players from last season such as Robert Green, Charlie Taylor, Kyle Bartley, Liam Bridcutt and Chris Wood, but he has already impressed in the Elland Road dugout.

Not only are summer signings like Saiz, Ezgjan Alioski and Pierre-Michel Lasogga impressing in the final third, but Leeds have also been solid at the back under Christiansen.

Leeds have conceded just twice in seven games this season, giving them the joint-best defensive record in the Championship alongside Preston North End – and it’s now six league clean sheets in a row for the Whites, a club record in the Championship.

Christiansen was told about that fact after Tuesday’s game, but told BBC Radio Leeds that such statistics give him ‘nothing’, and he isn’t interested in those kind of numbers, just the three points against a good Birmingham side – though privately, Christiansen will surely be hoping to keep up that defensive stability for some time yet.

“Well I don’t know, of course it’s nice to hear, but it doesn’t give me anything – it’s just numbers,” said Christiansen. “What it gives me today is another three points, which is very good, again because we didn’t perform to our level, and still were able to take three points against a very good team.” he added.
