Leeds United moved closer to guaranteeing their play-off place with a 2-0 win over Brighton and Hove Albion, also closing the gap to the automatic promotion spots.

After draws against Fulham and Queens Park Rangers in recent weeks, Leeds were looking to get back to winning ways in a tough game against second-placed Brighton and Hove Albion.

Garry Monk’s men played out a tight first half against the Seagulls, but took the lead in the second half when Charlie Taylor embarked on a strong run down the left, and crossed for Chris Wood to send a looping header into the net.

Leeds then sealed a 2-0 win and all three points when Souleymane Doukara was brought down inside the penalty area by Fikayo Tomori, and Chris Wood stepped up to score from the penalty spot.

Beating a team battling for automatic promotion is a huge result for Leeds, and Monk’s side now lie eight points off second place, giving them an outside chance of automatic promotion to the Premier League.

Monk added that it ‘doesn’t get any better’ than Leeds’ display against Brighton, crediting the players and the incredible fans for the win.

Assistant boss Pep Clotet also sent a message to fans, admitting that Elland Road was ‘buzzing’ thanks to the noisy and passionate Leeds supporters backing their team against Brighton.
