‘It did annoy me’: Arsenal legend unhappy with Arteta’s recent transfer decision

Arsenal have had to make a number of tough decisions this summer. The current financial climate has forced them to part ways with a few people they normally would have kept.

The Gunners let go of their Head of Football, Raul Sanllehi, and a number of their scouts. On the pitch, as well, Arsenal have been forced to make a few decisions that have left a few fans and pundits annoyed.

One such decision was regarding Emiliano Martinez. The Argentine became an instant fan favourite when he came into the side to replace Bernd Leno last season.

Martinez helped the club win the FA Cup and the Community Shield but Leno’s return meant that he would no longer remain the number one. That forced the Argentine to leave the club and Aston Villa secured his signature earlier this week.

Arsenal’s decision to sell Martinez annoyed David Seaman

Arsenal legend David Seaman spoke on TalkSport’s Breakfast show (17 September, 08:45 am) where he admitted that he was annoyed by the club’s decision to sell Martinez this summer.

He said: “We’ve just sold the goalkeeper (Martinez) as well which was a little bit puzzling for me. He had a great end of last season and started this season really well. It was something that I thought Arsenal would keep hold of him because he showed what he could do.

“The fact he went to Villa it did annoy me. I wanted two great goalkeepers at Arsenal because it means they bring the best out of each other, but he wants to be a number one and I think that’s what has decided it.”

Martinez certainly did enough last season to warrant a starting spot, but Leno’s performances before his injury should not be forgotten. The German saved the Gunners on multiple occasions and, considering how much Arsenal invested on the German two years ago, it was no surprise that they decided to keep him.

The Argentine’s sale has given Arsenal’s transfer kitty a good boost. One or two more big sales should raise enough funds to secure one of their top targets this summer, which will help fans forget about Martinez’s departure quickly.
