Former West Ham United striker Ian Wright has fired a warning to the club’s owners over the appointment of David Moyes.
West Ham called time on Slaven Bilic’s tenure as boss on Monday morning in the wake of the terrible 4-1 defeat at home to Liverpool last time out.
That loss leaves the Hammers in the bottom three at the quarter way stage of the season and with the international real co-owners David Sullivan and David Gold decided now was the time to act.
David Moyes was named as Bilic’s replacement on Tuesday and the news has been greeted with fury from Hammers fans who have called for the owners to sell the club such is their disdain for the appointment.
And while former Hammers striker Wright said he hoped Moyes would get it right, he fired a stark warning to Sullivan and Gold when appearing as a guest on Sky Sports The Debate show.
“He’s got to get them a lot fitter and he’s got to get confidence into the team,” Wright told The Debate.
“If you look at the games they’ve got, they’ve got Watford, Leicester, Everton then (Manchester) City, Chelsea, Arsenal, tough games and I think he’s got to hit the ground running and I hope for his sake he can.
“The West Ham fans as we know are not enamoured by the appointment and for me he’s going to need to win a few games just to get them onside.
“It could turn really dark otherwise.”
Wright knows the club well and sums the situation up perfectly.
With that run of fixtures if Moyes does not pick up points in the first three fixtures West Ham could be approaching Christmas stuck in the bottom three and the Scot could be facing up to a second straight relegation.
