Islam Makhachev’s situation has taken an unexpected turn after his latest training footage surfaced online.

The UFC lightweight champion had been at the centre of speculation regarding a potential appearance at the White House card.

Reports previously linked him to a blockbuster fight against Ilia Topuria at UFC Freedom 250. However, Dana White dismissed those rumours, insisting Makhachev was dealing with a hand injury and was not available.

That stance was reinforced again at the UFC London post-fight press conference last Saturday. Yet a new development has now raised questions about that narrative.

This Monday, Makhachev shared via Instagram story a video of himself training, working a punching bag with apparent intensity. The footage immediately caught attention given the recent claims about his condition.

If the injury was as limiting as suggested, the timing of the video creates uncertainty. The Dagestani star did not appear restricted, adding intrigue to whether he could have been ready for a major fight.

It also reopens the debate about the White House event. With enough time to begin a full training camp, the lightweight champion could be physically capable of competing if an agreement were reached.

The contrast between White’s comments and the visual evidence has left fans questioning the full picture, especially with Ilia Topuria claiming the 34-year-old’s champion injury was an ‘excuse’.

The uncertainty over Islam Makhachev’s next opponent

Despite the renewed intrigue, Makhachev’s next fight remains unclear. Topuria, who had been heavily linked, is now set to face Justin Gaethje on 14 June.

Other contenders are also tied up. Carlos Prates and Jack Della Maddalena will meet on 2 May in a bout widely viewed as a title eliminator, which likely delays any involvement until later in the year.

That leaves alternative options such as Ian Machado Garry or Kamaru Usman, both currently without scheduled fights.

For now, Makhachev’s future remains open, with the timeline suggesting any return may come from August onwards.
