Islam Makhachev has not fought since November 2025, leaving uncertainty around the UFC welterweight champion’s next move.

Despite his status as a two-weight champion, Makhachev is not scheduled for any bout right now. That inactivity has raised questions, especially given the division’s growing number of contenders.

Attempts were made to book him against Ilia Topuria on the White House card, but no fight has been finalised.

Now, a recent development suggests that situation may soon change. Makhachev has now hinted at a possible return date, offering a fresh timeline that could contradict previous expectations.

On Wednesday, Makhachev posted a picture posing with his two championship belts, accompanied by a simple caption: “July?” after a telephone emoji.

While not a formal announcement, the timing and wording pointed clearly towards a potential fight date.

If accurate, it would contradict Dana White’s previous comments on the situation, as the UFC president had stated that Makhachev would return in August due to a hand injury.

Ian Machado Garry emerges as likely next opponent

Attention now turns to who Makhachev could face upon his return. Two welterweight contenders remain without scheduled fights, Ian Machado Garry and Michael Morales.

Garry appears the more likely option at this stage. He has greater experience in the promotion and has faced a higher calibre of opposition.

He has also been vocal in calling for a fight with Makhachev, consistently pushing for the matchup in recent months.

Morales remains an alternative, but current momentum and positioning place Garry closer to securing the opportunity.
