Everton fans may remember the name Ishak Belfodil.

Everton frittered money away in Ronald Koeman’s stint at the club, but some fans may remember the players that they didn’t sign too.

Koeman and Steve Walsh oversaw mass spending on the likes of Ashley Williams, Yannick Bolasie, Morgan Schneiderlin and Davy Klaassen, with little success.

Another name Walsh put forward was that of Ishak Belfodil, attempting to lure the Algerian to Goodison Park in January 2017 having impressed with Standard Liege.

Koeman snubbed the move according to The Guardian, feeling that Belfodil wouldn’t be an upgrade on what he already had with the Toffees, leaving him to see out a 17-goal season.

So where is Belfodil now? Well, he spent last season on loan at Werder Bremen before earning a permanent move to Hoffenheim, and now he’s hitting the headlines.

Belfodil hit a hat-trick in the 4-0 win over Augsburg on Sunday, making it five goals in two games and nine in his last eight for the Bundesliga club. His tally for the season now stands at 14 in all competitions, as well as picking up five assists.

After years of unfulfilled potential, Belfodil may finally be living up to his promise at 27. He’s enjoying a fine season and a frankly ridiculous run of form, helping Hoffenheim push for European qualification.

Meanwhile, Everton are waiting for the transfer window to open in order to sign a striker, and some may well feel that Belfodil would have been a better investment then Cenk Tosun a year later, based on how he’s performing in Germany of late.
