Former Everton manager pulled the plug on a deal a year ago for Ishak Belfodil.
Ishak Belfodil was a late substitute last night as Werder Bremen and Bayer Leverkusen played out an entertaining German Cup clash.
Algerian international Belfodil is on loan at Bremen and is having a difficult season in Germany.
Just a year ago he came close to signing for Everton, as the Toffees chief Steve Walsh teed up a £10.4 million move to sign him from Standard Liege.
Manager at the time Ronald Koeman pulled the plug, telling The Guardian: “Belfodil was one of the players on our list and we had the opportunity to buy him but we took the decision not to sign him.”
Belfodil responded by scoring two goals in his next game for Liege, but it has largely been downhill from there.
He scored just two goals between January and May 2017, and did not attract a big summer move in the summer.
He instead moved on loan to Werder Bremen, who have an option to buy him at the end of this season.
It presently looks questionable as to whether they will take it.
Belfodil has only one goal in 17 Bundesliga appearances, and has only made eight starts.
This strike came in December, and he is yet to kick on since.
Everton have made plenty of poor transfer moves over the past 12 months, but scrapping a potential deal for Belfodil might just have been a smart move, where Koeman saved Walsh from making another mistake.
