Newcastle United’s midfielder Isaac Hayden has given the Chronicle his thoughts on the appointment of their new manager Steve Bruce.

Hayden spoke after Newcastle’s horrific start to pre-season in Asia where they were hammered by fellow Premier League side Wolves. The Magpies were not joined by their new manager Steve Bruce but he is expected to take charge before their next game.

Replacing a manager like Rafa Benitez is no easy task for Bruce but Hayden, who played the full game out in China on Wednesday, is adamant that his club have made a good appointment.

“I know the type of manager that he is and the type of man that he is. In the circumstances at the club at the minute, I know he can bring togetherness,” he said.

“I know what he does on the training field and what style of play he wants to bring in. For us, at this moment in time, it’s a good appointment.”

The departure of Benitez was received angrily by almost every Newcastle United fan with some even claiming that the club are destined for relegation. However, Hayden acknowledged the situation that the club are in at the moment and also spoke about the fans’ expectations.

“I think everyone’s realistic and knows where the club’s at at the minute. We haven’t got superstars in the team that are going to make the difference by themselves like other teams have.

“People talk about top six. I know what the fans want. They just want a team that progress, wants to improve and want to go forward. We get that.”

Newcastle are clearly in a tough spot ahead of the new season and with just over three weeks left in the transfer window, Bruce will need all the help that he can possibly get to keep his side’s hope of survival alive.
