Aston Villa look set to add two players in Westwood’s position, while Wolves boss Paul Lambert has already signed former Villan Andi Weimann.

Aston Villa look set to hammer another nail into Ashley Westwood’s coffin, signing two of the Championship’s standout central midfielders, Henri Lansbury and Conor Hourihane, this week.

Westwood has continued to struggle despite this season’s step down a division and was already in and out of manager Steve Bruce’s plans before Lansbury’s arrival – with Hourihane expected to follow.

Wolverhampton Wanderers, against whom Westwood was left on the bench on Saturday, were linked with a move for the 26-year-old earlier this month, although Wolves’ bloated midfield, combined with Villa’s shortage in the same position, made a deal unlikely.

Both issues appear to be resolved now though, after Wolves pair Prince Oniangue and Jed Wallace headed out on loan this week.

And with Molineux boss Paul Lambert, who signed Westwood for Villa four years ago, turning to another of his former Villa Park favourites, Andi Weimann, on Thursday, it is surely only a matter of time before the trio are reunited in the Black Country.

With Westwood under contract until 2020, a loan deal is perhaps the most likely outcome, although much is likely to depend on how much Wolves are willing to pay towards what remains a Premier League salary.
