Is Walcott better than Everton’s existing wide options?

The Arsenal winger is set to complete his move to Everton.

Everton are set to make another addition to their squad by completing a deal for Arsenal winger Theo Walcott.

Walcott is set to end his long association with Arsenal and join Everton in a £20 million move, as reported by BBC Sport.

Although Walcott hasn’t been a regular for Arsenal this season, Everton manager Sam Allardyce will hope that the 28-year-old will be able to make an instant impact on Merseyside, with the Toffees looking to avoid relegation.

Everton already have some impressive wide options at their disposal, but does Walcott represent a significant upgrade on those players?

Aaron Lennon

Aaron Lennon was frequently compared with Walcott when the pair were youngsters at Tottenham and Arsenal respectively, and they will now face a battle for a place in the starting lineup.

Given his price tag, it seems Walcott will be preferred initially and he is capable of providing a greater all-round threat than Lennon, who has yet to score this season.

Lennon can still make an impact with his direct runs, but Walcott, who scored 19 goals across all competitions for Arsenal last season, poses a greater threat to opposing defences.

Yannick Bolasie

Yannick Bolasie, meanwhile, is just back from a lengthy injury absence and is superior to Walcott in terms of technical ability.

However, the DR Congo international lacks consistency and he lacks ruthlessness in front of goal, although he is a frequent provider of assists.

Bolasie is a talented player and could battle Lennon to be a back-up option to Walcott, but the latter is still a more dependable performer.

Ademola Lookman

Another wide option at Everton’s disposal is Ademola Lookman, who has shown some encouraging signs since joining from Charlton Athletic.

Lookman has, though, been used sparingly this season and it seems unlikely that he will get much game time in the near future with Walcott set to join.

Overall, although Walcott is far from a perfect player, he can still prove to be an impressive signing for Everton and represents an upgrade on their current wingers.
