Is Tottenham’s team against Borussia Dortmund their best XI?

Mauricio Pochettino may well have discovered his strongest available starting line-up.

After Tottenham struggled both defensively and in a creative sense in the north London derby defeat to Arsenal, manager Mauricio Pochettino was fully aware that changes were required.

Pochettino took action for Tottenham’s trip to face Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League this week as he brought in Serge Aurier and Danny Rose in the wing-back positions, while Harry Winks started in midfield and Son Heung-min was also restored to the side.

The alterations certainly had the desired effect as Tottenham ran out 2-1 winners in Germany courtesy of goals from Kane and Son, and secured top place in their Champions League group.

Pochettino is now faced with a dilemma regarding whether he should consider the team he fielded against Dortmund as his strongest side, at least until Toby Alderweireld and Victor Wanyama return from injury.

The overriding feeling is that this is, indeed, Tottenham’s strongest team at present.

It may be rather harsh to drop Kieran Trippier and Ben Davies, both of whom have produced some excellent displays this season, but Aurier and Rose can offer a significant threat in terms of pushing forwards and putting opponents under pressure.

In midfield, meanwhile, Winks has the support of Christian Eriksen, while Son can also drop deeper at times, giving Alli licence to push forwards.

Alli provided two assists against Dortmund and seemed revitalised having been ineffective against Arsenal.

Mousa Dembele and Moussa Sissoko may also be frustrated to be left out of the side but Tottenham have a greater sense of cohesion without them.

Dembele remains a very talented player but certainly isn’t in the best of form at present, while Sissoko has improved immensely following a miserable first season at Tottenham but still lacks composure at times.

Tottenham return to Premier League action on Saturday with a home game against West Bromwich Albion and though the temptation to rotate will be there, Pochettino should seriously consider naming the same side that thrived against Dortmund.
