Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with the German playmaker but his reported wages mean it’s probably a no-go.
Tottenham Hotspur are linked with plenty of players this summer but signing Max Meyer on a free could and would be their best business of all.
The Gambling Times have credited Tottenham among other Premier League sides with an interest in the 22-year-old, whose contract at Schalke expires this weekend.
Some Spurs fans would love to see the Germany international in North London next season and beyond, but is it feasible? If reports from Germany are accurate, then probably not.
According to Bild, Meyer, who is reportedly wanted by Marseille, is demanding £4 million a year in salary from his next club.
That equates to around £77,000 per week and it seems unlikely that Tottenham would give a 22-year-old that sort of starting salary.
Earning that amount would take him above the likes of Christian Eriksen, Toby Alderweireld, Lucas Moura, Victor Wanyama and Eric Dier in the list of the Lilywhites’ best-paid players [Silly Season].
That wouldn’t sit well with the aforementioned players, given their importance to Mauricio Pochettino’s side, and therefore Spurs’ reported interest in Meyer might be dead in the water, unless the playmaker significantly reduces his salary demands.
