Is Erik Lamela’s recent form a response to suggestions he could be sold?

At the end of last month, reports emerged suggesting Tottenham were willing to cash in on record signing Erik Lamela this summer.

The Argentine has been inconsistent since signing from AS Roma, with The Mirror claiming club owner Daniel Levy will consider ‘realistic bids’ for the winger.

Lamela has been picked as a starter in the ensuing games, preferred by head coach Mauricio Pochettino to Andros Townsend.

Since the report was published on April 29th, Lamela ranks among the top six Premier League players for chances created, with 10 in three appearances.

He is also far ahead of his fellow Tottenham attackers, including the much lauded Christian Eriksen.

Lamela has also during this time won more tackles than any other Spurs player, showing he is working hard for the team, which has won just one of the last three games during this time.

Lamela appears to have the trust of Pochettino despite results being inconsistent, and is performing at a high level.

To take a positive slant, Lamela could be fired up having read reports he could be sold, and has been looking to send a message to chairman Daniel Levy that he must be kept at Tottenham.

Alternate view

There is a different slant to be taken on Lamela’s recent performances and inclusion.

Levy could have instructed Pochettino to pick the winger, or explained the importance of doing so, to put him in the shop window to sign this coming summer, and raise funds.

Lamela could also have the motivation to earn himself a move back to Italy where he impressed enough for Spurs to splash out on him two summers ago.
