Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly stepped out of the race to sign the Argentine but is it the right move?
According to a recent report from Sky Sports, Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino pulled out of the race to sign Juan Foyth this summer because he thought the teenager was overpriced at £9million. But could the Spurs supremo be making a mistake considering the market in which he is now operating?
While Tottenham will never be forced to pay more than they think a player is worth, it is worth noting that the transfer market has reached another level this summer, with average footballers commanding fees upwards of £25million.
It seems the biggest clubs in the country are having to fork out between £30million and £40million just to get a new face through the door, while the best of the bunch are not being allowed to leave for less than £50million; something Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has used to his advantage already this summer
Foyth is highly rated by Pochettino, but seemingly not enough for the club to spend the money to bring him to North London. The problem is Paris Saint-Germain were quick to step in, and with Inter Milan and Roma also interested, it is clear this is not just another teenager who may or may not fulfil his potential.
The Argentine has a bright future ahead of him and Tottenham should have sealed the deal while they could.
Levy knows club chairmen are not going to bend when it comes to valuations anymore and he should accept that he has to spend a bit extra to seal a deal that could be every bit as impressive as Eric Dier’s proved to be just a few years ago.
It may be for £5million more, but the Premier League is now – rightly or wrongly – flush with cash and, if Foyth goes on to sign for and excel at PSG, Tottenham will only have themselves to blame for not kick-starting their summer business with a £9million deal.
