It looks like Tottenham Hotspur are one of the several Premier League clubs interested in Newcastle United defender Jamaal Lascelles.

According to The Evening Standard, Tottenham want the England international, whom Newcastle consider to be worth around £45 million.

Even in an inflated market, that’s a lot of money and it will be interesting to see if Spurs’ reported interest in Lascelles has a bearing on Toby Alderweireld’s future in North London.

But it might well speak volumes for Tottenham’s hopes of keeping him if chairman Daniel Levy goes and splashes all that money on another centre-back.

Surely Levy wouldn’t sign Lascelles if he felt that the former Southampton stalwart had a long-term future at the club.

At the moment, they don’t particularly need another central defender, but bringing in Lascelles could indicate that the North Londoners expect a departure and, well, Davinson Sanchez and Jan Vertonghen aren’t going anywhere, leaving Alderweireld as the obvious man to exit.

It’s all hearsay at the moment, but it seems plausible that Lascelles’ potential arrival equates to Alderweireld’s exit.
