West Ham United have several talented players, but what would a five-a-side team consisting of players from their current squad look like?

With sports like cricket and golf launching shortened formats of their traditional games at various points in recent years to attract a new fanbase, some may wonder whether football could one day go down a similar route.

The most obvious version of the game for the governing body to consider looking at introducing – if they ever decided to pursue alternative formats – is five-a-side.

With that in mind, HITC Sport is going to take a look at what certain clubs’ five-a-side line-ups made up of current players would look like, and in this instalment, we look at which players a West Ham team would consist of…

Winston Reid

Winston Reid is easily West Ham’s best and most reliable defender so he could handle having to provide the stability to a very attacking-minded team.

Cheikhou Kouyate

Pedro Obiang may be a popular option given his current form, but Cheikhou Kouyate’s versatility gives him a slight edge for a five-a-side team. He may not be a headline-grabbing player, but he could make an impact anywhere, which may be especially useful with a goalkeeper not being selected.

Manuel Lanzini

Having that magical player is a must in a successful five-a-side team and Manuel Lanzini takes that role for the Irons’ line-up. He has been a talisman for Slaven Bilic’s side lately, and would be given a similar amount of responsibility in a shortened format.

Like Lanzini, Robert Snodgrass can score goals as well as give opponents headaches with his creativity. He brings a versatility, as does the final man on the team, that would be essential in a free-flowing five-a-side team.

Michail Antonio

With no out-and-out striker in the team – the forwards within the squad have done little to deserve selection based on their form this term – this line-up includes two players who know how to play up front, but can also play elsewhere across the pitch. Antonio is West Ham’s top scorer this term, but this five-a-side team may need to join a league with no head height rule as most of his goals have come from headers.
