Tottenham Hotspur have declared Emmanuel Adebayor fit again after illness and he could feature at home to Wigan this weekend.
On paper, Tottenham’s home game with Wigan this weekend is one they should win comfortably, and who can forget their 9-1 win at White Hart Lane several seasons back?
Yet in reality it is the type of game that over the past three years, supporters have been accustomed to watching the side drop points. Look at this season’s draws with Norwich and West Brom, Norwich’s win at the Lane last season, and two years ago, losses to Wolves, and Wigan.
So it is certainly good news that if ‘plan a’ is not going accordingly on Saturday, their ‘plan b’ is fit and healthy.
Last season of course, Emmanuel Adebayor was the first choice, firmly establishing himself under Harry Redknapp’s management as Tottenham’s top striker.
Since rejoining Spurs on a permanent basis in August, Adebayor’s season has been pretty disastrous thanks to injury and illness, and when he has got on the pitch he has offered little.
He has made just four substitute appearances in the Premier League, the longest unbroken spell on the pitch 35 minutes against Norwich on September 1.
Injury has meant he has not figured in a single Europa League or Capital One Cup game either, and since the Norwich draw now two months ago, he has played just 40 minutes of football for his club.
There was a spark in between, when he featured for Togo in an African Nations Cup Qualifier and scored, but after sealing his own fate that he will be absent for a month in January, all things considered it is not exactly good news for Tottenham.
The one thing his absence may do though is convince Daniel Levy for certain that he needs to fund the signing of a new striker in January, it certainly seems at present they need one, but Adebayor will want to show what he has to offer between now and then,
Andre Villas-Boas confirmed yesterday that the striker has resumed training after a stomach bug caused him to miss Wednesday’s trip to Carrow Road.
He is likely to start on the bench against Wigan, with Defoe rested in midweek watching on from the bench. The Englishman has taken the mantle as Spurs’ top striker this season and Adebayor has a real job on his hands to dislodge him.
If he gets a chance off the bench, perhaps this is the weekend he begins to make his case…
