Are the stars finally aligning for Manchester United to sign Arjen Robben this summer?

The Red Devils were strongly linked with signing the Dutchman in 2004 as reported the BBC, before he clinched a move to Chelsea.

The winger would go onto play for Real Madrid, and was signed for Bayern Munich by none other than Louis van Gaal, currently the Manchester United boss.

Van Gaal also managed Robben for Holland last summer, and was reported by The Mail to have been the subject of an enquiry from United.

Bayern Munich rejected that approach, but will it be different this time around?

Robben has long been an integral part of Bayern’s success, but when they demolished Porto at the Allianz Arena this week, it was done without him.

The 31-year-old was out with an injury, and boss Pep Guardiola is said to want to give his side a younger feel this summer. Dutch website Ed.Nl reported this week Bayern are keen to sign a player frequently described as his long-term international successor, Memphis Depay.

Manchester United are also keen on Depay, with the Manchester Evening News reporting so this week, but if they are pipped to his signature by Bayern, Robben could become a very accomplished consolation.

Last summer at the World Cup, Robben was superb for Holland, and outperformed the winger United did sing, Angel di Maria.

This season he has scored a stunning 17 goals in 21 Bundesliga games, with eight assists.

With Bayern proving they can deliver when it counts without him, and Memphis Depay on the horizon, the pulling power of Louis van Gaal combined with these factors may be enough to finally bring Robben to Old Trafford.
