The Leeds United stopper has to hope Robert Green leaves this summer, while a January loan move may be sensible for the Italian in the short term.
Leeds United goalkeeper Marco Silvestri may be contracted to the club until the summer of 2018, but his lack of game time makes his future anything but clear.
The Italian was Leeds’ undisputed number one until Garry Monk arrived, at which point Rob Green was signed and Silvestri was banished from the squad altogether before returning only to sit on the bench for 11 straight Championship matches.
Despite that disappointment, he has kept his head up and performed admirably when called on in the EFL Cup, with his penalty shootout heroics against Norwich City earlier this week earning plenty of plaudits.
Monk could not help but praise his stopper after the match, but Silvestri was quick to acknowledge the importance of regular first-team football; so is there any chance he has a future at the club?
Actually there could be; although much depends on how long Green remains at Elland Road.
Currently contracted until the end of this season, Green has made no secret of his desire to stay on, and there is where the defining factor lies.
If Green signs a contract extension Silvestri will know his path to the first-team is blocked for the remainder of his own deal. However, if the former England international moves on this summer, the Italian could force his way back into Monk’s first-team plans.
In the short-term, the need for regular senior football could mean a loan move would be sensible in January, especially with Bailey Peacock-Farrell returning from injury to act as back-up.
That would prevent Silvestri from growing increasingly frustrated while ensuring he is still on Leeds’ books come next season, especially when you consider Green will be 37 by then.
