The Leeds United goalkeeper has had a nightmare in recent weeks.

When Leeds United signed Felix Wiedwald from Werder Bremen in the summer, a quick glance at his recent record had some Whites fans fearing the worse.

After all, here was a goalkeeper who had shipped 13 goals in his last three Bundesliga matches; not exactly the stabilising force Leeds fans wanted as a potential long-term replacement for Rob Green.

With the experienced stopper having since left Elland Road, Wiedwald is competing with Andy Lonergan for a starting spot, winning the battle thus far. The problem is: on recent evidence the German stopper is not up to it.

This is the Wiedwald some Leeds supporters feared their club had signed – one who has conceded eight goals in three games, with three of those coming in the horror show against Sheffield Wednesday this weekend.

While Leeds’ midfield and defence have to take some of the blame for allowing the Owls to run riot, their goalkeeper is simply not up to the task.

For weeks Wiedwald kept clean sheet after clean sheet and it looked like Leeds had grabbed another bargain.

The issue was the Whites’ defence had been so solid that their ‘keeper had barely had anything to do, so judging Wiedwald on Leeds’ shut-outs was not a fair assessment of his ability.

Now, with a 3-2 victory over Ipswich Town and back-to-back defeats against promotion rivals Cardiff City and Sheffield Wednesday, it seems apparent that Wiedwald’s poor form at Bremen is creeping back into his game at Leeds, and that is something manager Thomas Christiansen cannot afford as he bids to keep their early momentum going.
