Arsenal and Sunderland ‘star’ Nicklas Bendtner is our nomination for the unwanted tag. We want to hear yours.
Have you heard of Samantha Brick? It is highly likely.
She has gone from being an unknown 48 hours ago- to a woman recognised, and criticised around the world.
Why? Because she dared to write an opinion piece entitled ‘Women Hate Me Because I’m Beautiful’.
It has attracted unheard of attention- and she has been dubbed the woman who’s face launched 1.5 million web hits.
Why has she been criticised? It is not because of jealousy, but most people have slammed her over-inflated ego describing her as average and far from beautiful.
What has all this got to do with football you ask?
Well we want to know which player gets your nomination for the prestigious ‘Samantha Brick of Football’ tag.
Our nomination is one Nicklas Bendtner.
Bendtner is a player whose hugely over-inflated opinion of himself has made him a laughing stock among supporters.
The Dane, who plays for Sunderland on loan but is owned by Arsenal, has constantly crowed he can be among the best footballers in the world, but his highlights last season were bagging a hat-trick against Leyton Orient and missing a sitter at the Nou Camp.
In 2009 he said: “I should start every game, I should be playing every minute of every match and always be in the team.”
A year later, ‘If you ask me if I am one of the best strikers in the world, I say yes because I believe it.”
Last May, he said in an interview that he wanted to replace Lionel Messi at Barcelona.
‘If it’s a free choice, I choose Barcelona. I’ve never had any idols in the football world but if I had a dream player to play with then it would be Xavi and Iniesta.’
He got his agent to talk up moves with Bayern Munich, Roma, and Sporting Lisbon, but none came calling. Instead he ended up at Sunderland.
There is nothing wrong with self-confidence, but when it turns to self-delusional grandeur, that is when the comparisons with Samantha Brick become evident.
To his credit, he is improving at Sunderland, and we may be being unduly harsh on him, but we think nobody else fits the bill as football’s Mrs Brick quite like Bendtner.
Who would you say is football’s Samantha Brick?
